The Lamborghini name burst onto the automotive scene in 1963 when Italian industrialist Ferruccio Lamborghini set out to build sports cars that would rival the very best of such legendary manufacturers as Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati, and others. With experience manufacturing a wide range of mechanical marvels, from air condition systems to tractors, Lamborghini's budding car company flourished throughout the 1960s, showing an eye for innovation that still drives the Lamborghini brand to this day.
The 1970s brought a downwardly spiraling economy, and Ferrucio Lamborghini sold off his stake in the auto company. He retired in 1974 to focus on his other holdings and to pursue his love of winemaking. This brought an end to Ferrucio's short but monumental era of sports car design. While Lamborghini automobile manufacturing changed ownership numerous times over the next decades, the Lamborghini family would turn to a new generation to take the reins of the family empire.
After Ferruccio Lamborghini's first-born son Antonio or "Tonino" earned a degree in Political and Economic Sciences from the University of Bologna, he joined his father at the company and carved out a prominent leadership role. By the 1980s, Tonino turned his eyes towards pursuing his passions: accessories and design.
Tonino Lamborghini unveiled his passion project Tonino Lamborghini Style and Accessories in 1981. Tonino, like his father before him, focused on innovative designs inspired by the Lamborghini family's Italian heritage and background in mechanical engineering. The company continued to expand through licensing partnerships during the 1990s and into the new millennium.
